Zero Emission Cold Chain (ZECC)

The project integrates technical (engineering and food quality/safety), behavioural, financial and business aspects to provide sustainable integrated solutions to the decarbonisation conundrum. More than 60% of our food is dependent on the cold-chain, and cold-chain is a major contributor to our energy demand. The project includes identifying scenarios of the food cold chain up to 2050 and assessing how different situations would affect the energy and cooling demand, as well as the direct and indirect emissions across the food chain from farm to fork. The scenarios include the increase of temperature and ambient humidity, as well as other technology, behaviour, and economic factors.

What are the key innovative aspects of the project and the story behind it?

Whole systems modelling needs to be developed for decarbonising the food system from farm to fork. This is essential for achieving the resilience and decarbonisation target of the food and drink sectors.
