Students and staff from the School of Art, Architecture and Design and London Met Lab’s Empowering London module have so far planted 1700 trees at Mudchute City Farm through the Woodland Trust’s ‘Free Trees for Schools and Communities’ scheme. Students first calculate their personal environmental footprint, then offset this by planting mixed native tree species that create hedges to encourage wildlife on the farm, during an annual event.
What are the key innovative aspects of the project and the story behind it?
The project is organised by Associate Professors Sian Moxon and George Fereday, as part of the School’s Art, Architecture and Design Education Declares initiative and the university’s wider approach to Education for Sustainable Development to equip students to tackle the climate and ecological emergency. It is innovative in being embedded in teaching, encouraging students to take responsibility for their own environmental impact before influencing that of others through their professional work in subjects such as Architecture.
